57-year-old Yekye Gabriel from Botiso/ Amanfonso was adjudged the Sunyani West Municipal best Farmer during this year’s National Farmers Day celebration held in the Municipality at the St. Thomas R/C Park, Fiapre.
He received a tricycle, Knapsack sprayer, cutlasses, wellington boots, certificate and among other items as his price.
Mr. John Owusu from Timber Nkwanta was adjudged the first runner up who also received Deep Freezer, knapsack spraying machine, wellington boots, cutlasses, wax print and other items and Madam Mariama Abubakar from Fiapre was the 2nd Runner up. She also received 32inches television, knapsack spraying machine, wellington boots, cutlasses and other items.
Other categories of awards included best Physically challenged Farmer, Best Agric Extension Agent, and Best Women in Agric.
Mr. Evans Kusi Boadum, the Municipal Chief Executive, speaking the awards congratulated the winners for their contribution towards food security in the Municipality and the country at large.
He urged the famers to take advantage of the various government interventions and policies such the planting for food and jobs phase II, climate mitigation intervention and promoting of cash crops etc.
The Municipal Director of Agric, Mr. Douglas Lebna applauded government and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for policy interventions taken so far to facilitate climate smart agriculture to ensuring sustainable food security in the country.
According him, about 1080 farmers in the municipality have benefited from the PFJ 2. Grant inputs in the form of seed maize, seed rice, fertilizers and weedicides. Also 27, 000 coconut seedlings, 41, 500 mango and 15,000 oil palm seedlings has been supplied to farmers in the municipality.
On his part, the Member of Parliament, Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah commended farmers for their contributions towards the development of the country. He urged the farmers to adhere improve farming practices to ensure their safety and improve their yields.
He donated 200 knapsack spraying machines, 200 wellington boots, cutlasses and other items to support the celebrations.
