MANDATE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
The Department of Agriculture in the municipality shall:
1. Promote extension services to farmers
2. Advise the municipal assembly on matters related to agricultural development in the municipality.
3. Assist in the formation and implementation of agricultural policies for the municipal assembly within the framework of the national policies
4. Participate in the provision of extension services in the areas of natural resources management, rural infrastructure and small-scale irrigation in the municipality.
5. Submit a report on the implementation of policies and programs to the municipal assembly
6. Assist and participate in on-farm adaptive research
7. Lead the collection of data for analysis on cost-effective farming enterprises
8. Promote soil and water conservation measures through the appropriate agricultural technology.
9. Disseminate and adopt improved soil and water conservation methods.
10. Promote agro-forestry development to reduce the incidence of bushfires.
11. Promote an effective and integrated water management
12. Assist and facilitate sustained pasture and forage production, and act as a grower to farmers

CURRENT PROGRAMMES AND PROJECTS BEING CARRIED OUT
1 Feed Ghana Programme: This programme was launched on 3rd April 2025 at Techiman in the Bono East of Ghana
GOAL:
To accelerate the transformation of Ghana’s agricultural sector, ensure food security, create sustainable employment, and enhance economic growth by reducing import dependency while boosting domestic production and export.
Specific Objectives:
- Increase agricultural productivity and production to reduce imports
- Enhance food security and improve nutritional outcomes
- Increase raw material supply to the agro-industry
- Enhance value addition
- Increase agricultural export
- Create jobs and wealth
2 West Africa Food System Resilience Project (FSRP): The Ministry of Food and Agriculture is implementing the West Africa Food System Resilience Project through the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) established to coordinate the implementation of activities and foster collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The development objective of FSRP is to boost preparedness against food insecurity and improve the resilience of food systems in Ghana. The development objective will be achieved through improving farmers”” access to usable weather, climate and advisory services; improving access to local climate information services through digital information platforms; facilitating the co-production of services between private and public sector; increasing farmers’” access to agriculture and nutrition sensitive technologies developed by a consortium of NCoS, Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and other international research institutes; establishing spatial information system to design and plan climate resilience land management practices; promoting private sector involvement in regional agricultural trade; and supporting women farmers to access services to improve marketing along target commodity value chain.
3 Affordable Agricultural Financing For Resilient Rural Development (AAFORD) Project
- Fananciers: it is a project under the Ministry of Finance (MoF) funded by IFAD, GoG, in partnership with CARE.
- Duration: 4-year period (2 ½ years remaining)
- Objective: the main objective of AAFORD is to use capacity building and affordable finance to improve productivity, income and resilience of rural smallholder farmers, vulnerable women, men, youth and agri. MSMEs engaged in their 4 main crops (Maize, Rice, Soya bean and Groundnut)
- AAFORD Approach and Outreach
AAFORD is using the value chain approach to reach out to at least 50,000 smallholder rural farmers in its operational area.
