BUSINESS OPERATING LICENSE INFORMATION DOCUMENT

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

It is a legal requirement for any individual or organisation intending to establish and operate a business within or outside the Sunyani West Municipality to first obtain a Business Operating License from the Sunyani West Municipal Assembly (SWMA).

  • The business license is valid until 31st December each year.
  • Licenses must be renewed annually for a fee.
  • The Revenue Unit of the Municipal Assembly manages all issues related to licensing fees and permits.
  • Office hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

2. PROCESS TO OBTAIN A BUSINESS OPERATING PERMIT

To apply for a business operating permit:

  1. Submit an application or introductory letter to the Metropolitan Chief Executive, clearly stating:
    • Name of the business
    • Type of business
    • Business location
  2. Attach all relevant documents, such as:
    • Certificate to Commence Business
    • Certificate of Incorporation
    • Other statutory documents (where applicable)
  3. Verification of documents with the:
    • Registrar General’s Department
    • Bank of Ghana (for financial institutions)
    • Other relevant issuing authorities
  4. Inspection of business premises, if required.
  5. A bill is generated and issued based on:
    • Type and location of business
    • Applicable provisions in the Local Government Act (Act 462), specifically sections 34, 78, 94, and 98
    • The Fee Fixing Resolution of the Sunyani West Municipal Assembly
  6. Upon payment of the bill, a receipt and certificate are issued.
  7. The certificate is renewable annually.

3. BUSINESS LICENSE APPLICATION

All applications must be made at the Revenue Office of the Sunyani West Municipal Assembly. No business or professional practice may commence without first obtaining this license.


4. BUSINESS CHANGES AND CLOSURES

Businesses must notify the Revenue Office of the following:

  • Change of business name
  • Closure of business
  • Transfer of ownership

Important Notes:

  • An operating license is not transferable.
  • A new business cannot use the license of a previously registered business.
  • A transfer of ownership is treated as the termination of the existing license.

5. BUSINESS LICENSE RENEWALS

  • Licenses must be renewed annually on or before December 31st.
  • The same procedure used for the initial application should be followed for renewals.
  • Failure to renew may attract penalties or lead to the suspension of operations.
