30-year-old farmer at Boffourkrom crowns Sunyani West Municipal Best Farmer

Mr Akayoruke Anupor, a 30-year old farmer from Boffourkrom was on Friday crowned the Sunyani West Municipal Best Farmer.

He has acres of maize, vegetable, and cocoa farms as well and livestock and other economic crops and he took home a motor king, bags of fertilizers, wax print, bars of key soap, and other farm inputs.

At the 37th farmer’s day celebration held at Chiraa, Mr Samuel Quaye aged 25 from Addai-Boreso was adjudged the second Best Farmer and received refrigerator, farm inputs, bars of key soap, and wax print.

Mrs Rose Dukum from Kantro was the best female farmer and she took home a Motor king each, bags of fertilizer, clothes, farming tools, and bars of key soap.

other deserving farmers also received consolation prizes ranging from flat screen television, radio player, sound systems, bicycles, spraying machines, and cutlasses.

Mr Buabeng Adams, the Sunyani West Municipal Director of Agriculture expressed concern about the misapplication of fertilizers and advised the farmers to engage Agriculture Extension Agents.

He congratulated the award winners, and advised farmers to regard farming as a commercial activity and improve on their farm work.

Barimah Mintah Afari II, the Chief of Chiraa said excessive and misapplication of agro-chemicals had serious health hazards on human life.

He, therefore, called on the municipal agriculture directorate to assist farmers to engage in organic farming, and called on the government to control the high importation agro-chemicals into the country.

Barimah Afari II also called on the government to provide storage facilities in the area to address post-harvest losses of, particularly perishable crops to motivate vegetable farmers to expand their economic activities.
