SERVICE LIST
The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development is one of the decentralized agencies under the Assembly to ensure the welfare and overall development of inhabitants of communities in the Sunyani West Municipality are taken care of. In this direction, the Department executes its mandate through two main units namely the Social Welfare Unit and the Community Development Unit.
The Department of Social Welfare and community development performs four (4) main programmes. These are:
1. Child Rights Promotion and Protection (C.R.P.P.)
2. Justice Administration (J.A.)
3. Community Care (C.C.)
4. Budget, Planning and Administration (B.P.A.)
1. CHILD RIGHT PROTECTION AND PROMOTION
Under this core programme, the report covered services related to families, more importantly children and women. These services are referred to as casework with families. Examples are: child maintenance, paternity, child custody, family welfare, and family reconciliation and monitoring of children’s homes etc.
• Settlement of family/child related cases reported in the office and collaborates with other Agencies like DOVVSU, Legal Aid, CHRAJ, Court and NPOs among others to make sure victims get justice.
• Register and assist child in need of care and protection.
• Assist children who come in conflict and contact with the law.
• Intensify social education on the effects of child labour to reduce the menace in the municipality.
• Supervise and monitor activities of Early Childhood Development Centres in the Municipality.
• Supervise the activities of Residential Homes in the Municipality
2. JUSTICE ADMINSTRATION
Justice Administration is one of the core programmes of the Department of Social Welfare. It deals with court work.
The well-being of children who come into contact and conflict with the law.
The Social welfare Officer is attached to the Family Tribunal and Juvenile
Court as a panel member who assists the Court or Magistrate in the
determination and decisions of cases.
• Attend family Tribunal sittings to ensure effective settlement of cases like child custody, child maintenance, paternity, juvenile cases and family welfare cases, Adoption & fosterage and Gender Base violence etc.
3. COMMUNITY CARE
Services rendered under this core programme include Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme and facilitation of financial support to PWDs.
• Identify and Integrate the vulnerable and the Disabled into main stream development
• Identify, Register, support and advocate for PWDs in the Sunyani West Municipality
• Identify, Register and support vulnerable group
• Supervise leap activities in the Municipality
4. Support and organize skill-based training for targeted groups in order to align them into mainstream development
5. Organize adult/mass education meet in issues affecting children, women and other target groups in the municipality
6. General counseling services available to the Public.
7. assist communities to initiate and implement self-help projects
8. community profiling
9. Monitor/ supervise the activities of NPOs in the Municipality
