The 38th edition of the Farmers’ day celebration in the Sunyani West Municipality was held in collaboration with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to honor both the Municipal and Regional Farmers for their contributions towards nation building. The programe was held at Dumasua, a farming community in the Sunyani West Municipality under the theme: “Accelerating Agricultural Development through Value Addition”.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Evans Kusi Boadum in his address said the day was set aside to honor farmers and fisher folks for their relentless effort in feeding the nation and to acknowledge the vital contributions of a strong agricultural sector to the prosperity of the economy.
“We are grateful to our farmers and fisher folks for the daily supply of food, raking in scarce foreign exchange through the export of food and other commodities, supporting the country’s industrialization agenda drive by providing raw materials for industry and for opening up job opportunities” he said.
The MCE mentioned that, two major loads leading to farming communities have been awarded on contract for tarring which work is progressing and contractors are on site. These are the Odomase to Tainso road and Odomase to Boffourkrom road.
The Bono regional Minister, Hon. Justina Owusu Banahene said government is doing everything possible to put agriculture on the right path of transformation and since assuming office, government has left no one in doubt about the importance of agriculture as a key deriving force for accelerating economic growth.
According to her, government flagship programs such as Planting for food and jobs (PFJ), Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), One-District –One Factory (IDIF), One –District One-Warehouse (IDIW),and One District One Dam (IDID) strongly signal government’s determination to reverse the declining fortunes of the agricultural sector.
These programmes according to the Regional Minister, focus on improving yields of farmers, guaranteeing access to markets, increasing household income, reducing post- harvest losses, securing good storage facilities and enhancing the availability of extension services.
The day was also used the launched anti- bushfire campaign where any fire related activities such as palm wine tapping, game and hunting activities, charcoal burning, cooking and smoking in the farm, chain saw operator’s activities, bush burning, honey harvesting etc. have been banned
Rev. Daniel Owusu and Mr. Ferka Mensah Robert were judged the regional and Municipal Best Framers for the year 2022 respectively.
